So here we go. If there’s one trend that I’m getting pretty tired of in Hollywood it’s the trail of remakes and reboots that are endlessly appearing.
IMDB currently has a list of films being remade/rebooted starting from last year.
Poltergeist (2015) is the latest in this trend and I can’t honestly find a reason for the film to be remade. Watching the trailer it also looks as though the art of storytelling is failing miserably and it’s bringing nothing new to the table. There’s no mystery left and it seems that the film is being marketed as a simple rehash of the same story with modern special effects. What the original film did well was to mix the horror and the unknown with great effect. Here they’ve simply ramped up what was eerily haunting about the original film and cheapened it with overtly evil clowns and small freaky ‘ghost-like’ children.
Starring Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt and Jared Harris, I don’t know if even the seemingly strong cast can save this one from being an unremembered addition to the ‘bringing a new generation an old story’ routine.
So check out the trailer but please if you go and see this film, check out the original film first.
(p.s. the clown in this trailer has nothing on the original)
